Produce Info, Storage Tips and Recipes

Cherries

The Basics

The cherry is a stone fruit that has been consumed in the northern hemisphere since prehistoric times. In the U.S., most cherries are produced in Michigan, a state which calls itself the "Cherry Capital of the World." (Read more about cherries on Wikipedia.)

Storage Tips

Cherries are very perishable and should be refrigerated in a plastic bag. Before eating them, let them come to room temperature as the flavor is much better.

Nutrition

Cherries are a great source for both fiber and vitamin C. They also contain phytochemicals like anthocyanins, which have been studied for their beneficial effects on reducing the risk of diseases like cancer, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease. (See more cherry nutrition facts on Self.com.)
