Buy the Bobcat!
Oké USA, our supplier of organic fair trade bananas, is holding a fundraiser for the farmers of Ecuador who lost their farms, land, and livelihoods in severe weather and hurricanes last month. The storms not only destroyed much of the coop's crops but also washed out bridges and roads, making transport impossible. Oké is hoping to raise $20,000 so the farmers can purchase a Bobcat Excavator to drain the flooded fields and do preventative maintenance. To learn more and/or donate head to buythebobcat.org.

Bread & Egg price increases
Both Nashoba Brook Bakery and Pete and Gerry's have announced price
increases that will take affect starting the week of March 3rd. The price
increase is primarily due to the increasing price of grains.
Wheat and feed grain prices have been rising dramatically this past year
primarily due to increased demand from growing economies overseas such as
China. These emerging economies are developing a taste for processed foods
and meat; both requiring grains.
Other factors include poor crops this past year (global warming?), as well
increased demand in bio-diesel and ethanol resulting in more farm land being
converted from wheat to soy and corn.
In addition to the above, demand for organics continues to increase. Organic
grain supplies have not been able to keep pace with the demand. To
transition from conventional to organic, farmers must wait three years
before their crops can be officially certified as organic. With record
prices for conventional grains, farmers have less motivation to convert to
organic. Read more...

Real Pickles!
We are offering Real Pickles’ certified organic natural pickled vegetables!
Real Pickles is based in Montague, MA and uses certified organic vegetables
grown in Massachusetts and Vermont. It is one of a small handful of businesses
in the United States producing raw, lactic acid fermented (or naturally fermented)
pickles. This traditional pickling process went out of favor with the advent
of industrial food production. Modern pickling methods, including use of vinegar
(usually in place of fermentation) and pasteurization, produce a uniform, shelf
stable product suitable to the needs of the large food corporations. Unfortunately,
modern pickles do not offer the authentic flavor or health-promoting qualities
of traditional pickles. To learn more about Real Pickles, please visit their website realpickles.com.
We are offering the following items:
Dill pickles - 26 oz - Traditional
cucumber pickles, with fresh dill and garlic. These are real pickles: naturally
fermented without vinegar. The perfect snack or sandwich accompaniment.
Sauerkraut - 15 oz - - Authentic,
fresh sauerkraut with a dash of dill and caraway.
Ginger Carrots - 15 oz - These
colorful carrots have a wonderful gingery zing. Use as a topper with salads,
bean dishes, or peanut noodles, or as a filling for spring rolls or nori
rolls.
