Sweet Potatoes

Sweet Potatoes

The Basics

Despite their similar appearance, the sweet potato is actually only distantly related to the common potato. Also, though there are differences between a sweet potato and a true yam; the yams and sweet potatoes that are commonly available in the US are technically all sweet potatoes, regardless of how they are labeled!

Storage Tips

Store sweet potatoes in a dark, dry, cool place. Use within one week if stored at room temperature. If refrigerated, their natural sugars will turn to starch and ruin the flavor.

Nutrition

Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of vitamin A, vitamin C, and manganese. In fact, one medium sweet potato contains a whopping 438% of the recommended daily value of vitamin A! (See more sweet potato nutrition facts on Self.com.)
